handscupe / handscupe® paresis
Tingling, burning, paraesthesias, muscle weakness or numbness in the arms and hands – paresis occurs when nerves have been damaged temporarily or permanently. Neurological impairments often result from injuries in the area of the head or spinal cord due to stroke, disc herniation, tumours, following an accident, or as a result of autoimmune diseases with neurological manifestations e.g. in multiple sclerosis or infantile cerebral palsy.
Affected persons cannot perceive touch, cold and heat, or pain, or only experience such sensations to a very limited extent.
Paretic symptoms significantly restrict everyday activities. And eventually, it is not only the patient’s performance that suffers – at the same time, the quality of life is affected in the long term.
handscupe® paresis is an ergonomically-shaped medical hand rest enabling the correct positioning of paretic hands and therefore ensuring the required rest.
The usage of the handscupe® paresis supports therapy of symptoms occurring at the site of treatment, such as spasms, contractions or flaccid paralysis
The ergonomically designed contact area is optimized for positining a hand in a neutral position.
The position of the hand on the handscupe® paresis is achieved by placing the forearm on a solid underground (e.g. a table) while being seated.
Here the hand is in a position between bending and stretching, spreading and crossing, internal and external rotation. This makes it possible to counteract contractures and spasms.
handscupe® paresis keeps the hand and fingers in a position that can prevent congestion and the emer-gence of contractures. Flexors and stretchers of the hand are relieved in a relaxed resting position (neutral position). This results in a preferably wide opening of the carpal tunnel, therefore the blood is able to circulate normally.
Paresis may occur in conjunction with neurological diseases, especially following a stroke, brain damage or other diseases affecting the central nervous system.
handscupe® paresis may be applied to hands in need of rest with intact skin, suffering from pathological symptoms as consequences of paresis or plegias especially following a stroke, craniocerebral trauma, infantile cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, paraplegia or a herniated disc.
The indicati on is to be compiled by a doctor.
No contraindications are known for the use of the handscupe® paresis.
In case of occurring congestions or swellings, the fixation strap should no longer be used and the attending therapist or physician should be consulted.
In any case of sustained pain, the therapy has to be cancelled and the attending therapist or physician should be consulted.
Adult patients with one of the indications described.
Users may be physicians, professionals and patients in clinical, outpatient or home settings.
The handscupe® paresis is intended for independent use by the patient at home.
Provided that the handscupe® paresis is properly used, no side effects, intolerances or allergic reactions are known up to the date.
In order to preserve its complete array of functions, the handscupe® paresis is to be treated with utmost care. Improper handling may lead to impairments or complete loss of functions of the handscupe® paresis.
We recommed gently washing the textile components of the handscupe® paresis in water at 60 °C using a washing bag. Hook parts should be removed before washing.
The plastic components are wipe-down disinfectable and can be cleansed with lukewarm water at 30 °C and soap.
The expected life of the handscupe® paresis is 2 years. Further use beyond is possible if the product is in safe and perfect condition.
The product is intended for permanent use on one patient and not for use by additional patients.
The ergonomically formed hand rest ensures easy use. The position of the hand on the handscupe® paresis is achieved by placing the forearm on a solid underground (e.g. a table) while being seated (fig. 1).
During usage the fingers are to be positioned exactly within the rests (fig. 2).
The metacarpal area can be supported by the bulge of the handscupe® paresis (fig. 3 and 4). It is not decisively important where the fingertips are placed.
If necessary, the handscupe® paresis can be fixed to the hand. If required, the fixation strap of the handscupe® paresis may be attached to its guide slots, pulled over the back of the user’s hand, and be fixated by the velcro fasteners (fig. 5 and 6).
The application of the fixation band can be explained by a specialist or the fixation band can be applied using the illustrations on the handscupe® paresis. The treatment should be applied daily for at least 1 x 60 minutes or 2 x 30 minutes. If bodily well-being is ensured, the treatment may be continued indefinitely.
Paresis therapy depends on the root cause and should begin as early as possible. When accompanying the treatment of the underlying disease, physiotherapy and physical therapy often achieve alleviation, increase mobility, and have a pain-reducing effect.
The use of handscupe® paresis can specifically support the treatment of paretic hand symptoms such as spasms, contractures or flaccid paralysis – also in combination with physiotherapy.
When used regularly, handscupe® paresis can help patients to train hand and finger muscles. In this way, users promote mobility and blood circulation in the hand and arm, which contributes to pain relief. Patients can cope with their daily lives more independently again. When used regularly, handscupe® paresis can sustainably counteract pain, discomfort (paraesthesias) and fluid retention/congestion.
With its positive effect on contractures, spasms, and pain, handscupe® paresis can help that patients sleep better again. A restful night’s sleep is an important source of power for patients to master the daily routine with all its challenges on a daily basis.
